What They Do

Draw air through the engine's intake manifold into its cylinders. The process is alternatively called air induction. Meanwhile, fuel injectors spray gas through intake valves; the air combines with it, the spark plugs ignite the mix, it burns, and the engine produces the power it runs on.

How They Work

The process starts with an air filter, which captures contaminants, well before they can enter the engine. A mass airflow sensor, an air metering system, and oxygen sensors regulate air levels. Together, these parts manage air and exhaust levels and feed info about them back to an engine control unit, or ECU.

Cold Air Intakes

Here, the engine air filter gets relocated to just outside the engine compartment. You can usually find a cold intake above a wheel well or near a fender. This placement enables it to take in cooler, denser, and therefore higher-quality air. The result: slightly improved engine power output.

The Signs of a Bad or Failing One

The three main ones are a lit Check Engine light on the dash, unusually fast engine rev, and abnormal idling speeds. The last two usually indicate air intake failure. The best thing to do, if you see these symptoms, is to plug in a code reader and do an inspection. If its results indicate you need a new induction system, be sure its genuine.
